CHTM Scheduled for Phone Upgrade as UNM Modernizes Campus Voice System
January 16, 2026 - Grace Faustino
The University of New Mexico is moving forward with a critical infrastructure initiative: the Voice System Replacement Project. This campus-wide effort replaces the university's aging phone equipment, which is scheduled to reach its end-of-support lifecycle in December 2026.
By transitioning to a modern platform now, UNM is taking proactive steps to prevent service disruptions, ensure high reliability, and support the evolving communication needs of our academic and research communities for years to come.
Spotlight: CHTM Upgrade on January 29
A key milestone in this rollout involves our critical research facilities. We are pleased to announce that the Center for High Technology Materials (CHTM)—one of UNM’s premier Category III Research Centers—is officially scheduled for its system upgrade on January 29, 2026.
Ensuring robust communication lines for high-level research facilities like CHTM is a top priority. This scheduled transition highlights the project team's commitment to supporting the complex needs of UNM's scientific community while modernizing vital infrastructure.
A Phased Campus Rollout
The project is currently active, with the implementation team moving across campus in a phased approach. Buildings are being scheduled for transition on a rolling basis to minimize disruption to daily operations:
Communication: Department administrators will be contacted directly as their specific buildings are queued for the upgrade.
Preparation: Faculty and staff will receive ample notice to prepare for the switch to new devices and updated features.
Deadline: All legacy equipment must be replaced before the December 2026 sunset of manufacturer support.
Faculty and staff do not need to take immediate action until they receive a notification specific to their building. The project team will provide detailed instructions and support resources as each phase approaches.
